Biography

Ignacy Jan Paderewski was born in 1860 in what is now Kuryłówka, Ukraine, and studied at the Warsaw Conservatory. Following his 1888 Paris debut he became one of the most celebrated pianists of his era, touring throughout Europe and the United States. As a composer he wrote, among other works, the "Minuet in G" and his only opera, Manru, premiered in Dresden in 1901. During the First World War he campaigned politically for Polish independence and briefly served as Poland's prime minister in 1919, signing the Treaty of Versailles. Paderewski died in New York in 1941.
