Biography

Hugo Wolf was born on 13 March 1860 in Windischgraz (now Slovenj Gradec, Slovenia) and died on 22 February 1903 in Vienna. From 1875 he studied harmony under Robert Fuchs and composition under Franz Krenn at the Vienna Conservatory, where Gustav Mahler was among his fellow students; he was expelled in 1877 for overly harsh criticism of his training. From 1884 to 1887 he worked as a music critic for the Wiener Salonblatt before establishing himself as a composer with his first song collection in 1888. With cycles such as the "Spanish Songbook" (1889/90) and the "Italian Songbook" (1890–96), as well as his only completed opera "Der Corregidor" (1896), Wolf ranks among the foremost song composers of the late Romantic era. Suffering from mental illness from 1897, he spent his final years in a Vienna psychiatric institution.
