Biography
Hüseyn Cavid was born in 1882 in Nakhchivan, the son of a clergyman, studied in Tabriz and completed a literature degree at Istanbul University in 1909. He then worked as a teacher in Nakhchivan, Ganja and Tiflis, and from 1915 in Baku, becoming one of the defining figures of modern Azerbaijani literature. In philosophically grounded verse dramas such as Sheikh Sanan (1914) and Iblis (1920) he combined religious and social themes with romantic pathos. In 1937 he was arrested on charges of counter-revolutionary activity and exiled to Siberia, where he died in a labour camp in 1941. He was officially rehabilitated in 1956, and his remains were transferred to Nakhchivan in 1982.
