Biography

Holger Simon Paulli was born in Copenhagen on 22 February 1810 and trained musically under, among others, the violinist and composer Claus Schall. From 1864 he spent twenty years as conductor of the Royal Danish Orchestra in Copenhagen and also made his name conducting performances of Richard Wagner's works in Denmark. As a composer he wrote an opera and several ballets, among them, together with Edvard Helsted and Niels W. Gade, the score for August Bournonville's "Napoli" (1842), for which he composed the third act with its famous tarantella. Paulli died in Copenhagen on 23 December 1891.
