Biography
Hirokazu Kore-eda, also written Koreeda, was born in Tokyo in 1962 and studied literature at Waseda University until 1987. He then made numerous television documentaries for the independent production company TV Man Union, focusing on memory, life and dying. His first feature film, Maborosi, won an award in Venice in 1995, and his second, After Life (1998), about a way station where the dead choose their happiest memory, brought him international recognition. Family dramas such as Nobody Knows (2004), Still Walking (2008) and Like Father, Like Son (2013), which won the Jury Prize at Cannes, cemented his reputation. In 2018 he won the Palme d'Or for Shoplifters; he later also worked in France (The Truth, 2019) and South Korea (Broker, 2022). Kore-eda usually edits his own films and also publishes literary writing.
