Biography
Hervé, born Louis-Auguste-Florimond Ronger, was born on 30 June 1825 near Arras. He worked as an organist, including at the Paris church of Saint-Eustache, as well as a singer and stage designer, before becoming conductor at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal in 1851. In 1854 he took over the Théâtre Déjazet, running it as Les Folies-Concertantes for his own pieces and paving the way for Jacques Offenbach's later stage. As house composer at the Théâtre des Folies-Dramatiques he wrote, among others, L'Œil crevé (1867), Chilpéric (1868) and Le petit Faust (1869); Mam'zelle Nitouche (1883) became his greatest success. Hervé, who also appeared at times as a singer and director of his own works, died in Paris in 1892.
