Hermann Goetz

1840 – 1876 · German

Biography

Hermann Goetz was born on 7 December 1840 in Königsberg and died on 3 December 1876 in Hottingen near Zurich. He studied piano with Hans von Bülow and counterpoint and instrumentation with Hugo Ulrich and Julius Stern at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin. In 1863 he moved to Winterthur as an organist and later worked in Switzerland as a piano teacher and choral conductor. His greatest success was the comic opera 'Der Widerspenstigen Zähmung' (The Taming of the Shrew, 1874), based on Shakespeare; a tuberculosis that had appeared early increasingly confined him and ended his life in 1876 before he could finish his second opera, 'Francesca da Rimini'.
