Biography
Henry Mason was born in London in 1974 and has worked freelance since 1996 as a playwright, director and actor, mainly for stages in Austria and Germany. He studied theatre practice and German at the University of Exeter from 1993 to 1997. From 2007 to 2009 he ran the u\hof:, the young audiences' branch of the Landestheater Linz, and until 2012 he was senior resident director at the Theater der Jugend in Vienna. He made his directing debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2013 and at the Vienna State Opera in 2016, and he has produced new German translations of Shakespeare plays and of musicals such as “Gypsy” and “Carousel”. With the composer Thomas Zaufke he wrote the texts of the musicals “Alice im Wunderland” (2012), “Der Hase mit den Bernsteinaugen” (2019, after Edmund de Waal) and “Die Königinnen” (2024). “Der Hase mit den Bernsteinaugen” won the German Musical Theatre Award for best musical in 2019, and Mason received the award for best lyrics.
