Biography

Heinz Strunk, born Mathias Halfpape in Bevensen in the Lüneburg Heath in 1962, spent many years working as a musician, including with the dance band Tiffany's from 1985 to 1997. Together with Jacques Palminger and Rocko Schamoni he forms the comedy trio Studio Braun. His breakthrough as a writer came in 2004 with the novel Fleisch ist mein Gemüse, which sold more than 400,000 copies; later books include Der goldene Handschuh (2016), filmed by Fatih Akin in 2019, Es ist immer so schön mit dir (2021), Ein Sommer in Niendorf (2022) and Zauberberg 2 (2024). The Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg staged the operetta Phoenix – Wem gehört das Licht, based on Fleisch ist mein Gemüse, in 2005, followed in 2025 by Studio Braun's stage version of Ein Sommer in Niendorf. Strunk received the Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize in 2016, the Goldene Kamera in 2018 and the Kassel Literature Prize in 2020, and was longlisted for the German Book Prize in 2021, 2022 and 2026.
