Biography
Heinrich August Marschner was born on 16 August 1795 in Zittau and initially began studying law in Leipzig in 1813, before turning to music under the influence of his teacher Johann Gottfried Schicht. After early stage successes, Carl Maria von Weber, who premiered Marschner's opera 'Heinrich IV. und d'Aubigné' in Dresden in 1820, brought him on as music director at the Dresden opera. From 1827 to 1830 Marschner served as Kapellmeister at the Stadttheater Leipzig, where his first major Romantic operas, 'Der Vampyr' (1828) and 'Der Templer und die Jüdin' (1829), had their premieres. In 1831 he moved to Hanover as royal Kapellmeister, a post he held until his retirement in 1859, composing his most significant work, 'Hans Heiling' (1833), during this period. Marschner died on 14 December 1861 in Hanover; his operas are regarded as an important link between Weber and Wagner.
