Biography

Hans Thomalla was born in Bonn in 1975 and studied composition at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts from 1994 to 1999. After working as assistant dramaturg at the Staatsoper Stuttgart, he went to Stanford University on a DAAD scholarship and earned his doctorate there under Brian Ferneyhough. From 2007 to 2024 he taught composition at Northwestern University, where he directed the Institute for New Music; since 2024 he has been professor of composition at the University of Chicago. His operas include "Fremd", premiered at the Staatsoper Stuttgart in 2011, "Kaspar Hauser" at Theater Freiburg in 2016, "Dark Spring" at the Nationaltheater Mannheim in 2020 and "Dark Fall" at the Schlosstheater Schwetzingen in 2024. His awards include the Kranichstein Music Prize (2004), the Ernst von Siemens Composers' Prize (2011), a Guggenheim Fellowship (2017) and a fellowship at the Villa Massimo in Rome (2024/25).
