Biography

H. C. Artmann was born on 12 June 1921 in Vienna-Breitensee and died there on 4 December 2000. From 1952 to 1958 he was a founding member of the Vienna Group, experimenting with language beyond conventional grammar. His dialect poetry collection med ana schwoazzn dintn (1958) marked his breakthrough and elevated Viennese dialect poetry to serious literary status. He also wrote surrealist prose, translated from numerous languages, and produced puppet plays such as die liebe fee pocahontas oder kasper als schildwache (1961). He received the Grand Austrian State Prize in 1974 and the Georg Büchner Prize in 1997.
