Biography
Grigori Samuilovich Frid was born on 22 September 1915 in Petrograd and died on 22 September 2012 in Moscow. He began his musical training in Irkutsk and completed it in 1935 at the Moscow Conservatory in the composition classes of Genrikh Litinsky and Vissarion Shebalin, where he later taught himself. In 1965 he founded the Moscow Youth Music Club, which, despite official cultural policy, also presented unofficial works by composers such as Sofia Gubaidulina and Alfred Schnittke. Alongside his compositional work — chiefly mono-operas such as "Das Tagebuch der Anne Frank" — Frid was also active as a painter and writer.
