Biography
Gottfried von Einem was born on 24 January 1918 in Bern and died on 12 July 1996 in Oberdürnbach, Lower Austria. From 1941 he studied in Berlin with Boris Blacher, and after settling in Austria in 1944 he also studied counterpoint with Johann Nepomuk David. His opera Dantons Tod brought him international recognition at the 1947 Salzburg Festival, followed by further successes such as Der Prozess and Der Besuch der alten Dame. From 1946 he held leading positions with the Salzburg Festival and the Vienna Konzerthausgesellschaft, and from 1963 to 1972 he taught composition at the Vienna Conservatory. In 2002 he was posthumously honoured by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations for having protected the Jewish musician Konrad Latte from deportation during the Second World War.
