Giuseppe Sarti

1729 – 1802 · Italian

Biography

Giuseppe Sarti was born in Faenza in 1729 and trained under Padre Giovanni Battista Martini in Bologna. From 1753 he served at the Danish royal court in Copenhagen, becoming Hofkapellmeister and opera director in 1755. In 1779 he won a competition against Giovanni Paisiello for the post of maestro di cappella at Milan Cathedral, where his pupils included Luigi Cherubini. He then answered a call to Saint Petersburg, where he directed the imperial opera and helped found a conservatory; on the journey there he met Emperor Joseph II in Vienna and encountered Mozart, who later quoted a melody from Sarti's opera Fra i due litiganti il terzo gode. Sarti died in Berlin in 1802 while travelling back from Russia.
