Biography

Giulio Caccini was born in Rome in 1551 and came as a young singer to the Medici court in Florence, where he made his name as an instrumentalist and singing teacher. As a member of the Florentine Camerata around Count Giovanni Bardi, he developed monody — solo singing with simple accompaniment — together with Jacopo Peri, ushering in the shift from Renaissance polyphony to the new dramatic music of the Baroque era. In 1602 he had his own setting of Ottavio Rinuccini's libretto "Euridice" printed, even before Peri's opera of the same name, which was actually staged first, appeared in print. With his 1601 collection "Le nuove musiche" he also produced the first systematic guide to virtuoso solo singing in this new style. Caccini died in Florence in 1618.
