Giovanni Pacini

1796 – 1867 · Italian

Biography

Giovanni Pacini was born in Catania in 1796, the son of the buffo singer Luigi Pacini, and was sent to Bologna at age twelve to study singing with the castrato Luigi Marchesi, soon turning to composition instead. By the mid-1820s he had established himself as one of Naples's leading opera composers with both serious and comic works; after a creative crisis in the 1830s he made a widely noted comeback with "Saffo" (1840). In total he composed around 74 operas as well as oratorios and masses, and wrote a much-cited autobiography, "Le mie memorie artistiche" (1865). He died in Pescia in 1867.
