Biography
Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was born on 4 January 1710 in Jesi, in the Marche region. After early lessons with Francesco Santi and Francesco Mondini, he studied violin and composition at the Conservatorio dei Poveri di Gesù Cristo in Naples under Gaetano Greco and Francesco Durante. In Naples he worked as maestro di cappella for several noble households and wrote around ten stage works alongside sacred music. He became internationally known above all for the comic intermezzo La serva padrona, whose 1752 Paris performance sparked the Querelle des Bouffons. Pergolesi died of tuberculosis in March 1736, aged 26, in Pozzuoli, shortly after completing his Stabat Mater.
