Gian Giorgio Trissino

1478 – 1550 · Italian

Biography

Gian Giorgio Trissino was born in 1478 into a noble family in Vicenza and worked as a scholar, diplomat and architectural theorist in the service of several popes and Emperor Maximilian I. As a humanist, he campaigned for a Greek-inspired spelling reform of Italian and wrote the epic poem "L'Italia liberata dai Goti," one of the first Italian epics modelled on classical antiquity. With his tragedy "Sofonisba," written in 1514–15, he created what he considered the first tragedy of modern European literature modelled on Greek antiquity; it was not staged until after his death. Trissino also mentored the young architect Andrea Palladio and died in Rome in 1550.
