Biography

George Enescu was born in 1881 in Liveni, Moldavia, and showed exceptional musical talent early on; at seven he was admitted to the Vienna Conservatory. From 1895 he studied composition in Paris with Jules Massenet and Gabriel Fauré. He performed internationally as a violinist and conductor and taught the young Yehudi Menuhin, among others. His major work is the opera "Oedipe" (1936); he also wrote symphonies, the popular "Romanian Rhapsodies" and chamber music. In protest against the communist regime, Enescu never returned to Romania after 1946 and died in Paris in 1955; Bucharest's music festival is named after him.
