Biography

George Orwell, born Eric Arthur Blair on 25 June 1903 in Motihari in what was then British India, grew up in England. From 1922 to 1927 he served in the British colonial police in Burma but returned to England disillusioned with colonialism and turned to writing. In 1936/37 he fought in the Spanish Civil War on the Republican side and was severely wounded; from 1941 he worked for, among others, the BBC and the magazine Tribune. With the novels Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) he created two of the most influential literary reckonings with totalitarian rule. Orwell died of tuberculosis in London on 21 January 1950.
