Biography
Georg Philipp Telemann was born on 14 March 1681 in Magdeburg and died on 25 June 1767 in Hamburg. Largely self-taught, he worked first as Kapellmeister in Sorau and then as Konzertmeister in Eisenach before becoming municipal director of music in Frankfurt am Main in 1712. From 1721 he directed Hamburg's church music as cantor and Director Musices, and in 1722 also took over direction of the city's Gänsemarkt opera. With more than 3,600 surviving works across nearly every genre of his time, he ranks among the most prolific composers in music history and shaped Hamburg's civic musical life through public concerts independent of court or church patronage.
