Biography

Georg Kaiser was born on 25 November 1878 in Magdeburg. With plays such as "From Morn to Midnight" (1912), "The Burghers of Calais" (1912/13) and the Gas trilogy ("The Coral", 1917; "Gas", 1918; "Gas II", 1920), he became one of the most influential dramatists of German Expressionism and, alongside Gerhart Hauptmann, the most frequently performed playwright of the Weimar Republic. After the Nazi seizure of power his works were banned; in 1938 Kaiser fled to Switzerland. During his Swiss exile he wrote the drama "The Raft of the Medusa" between 1940 and 1943, which was not premiered until after his death. Georg Kaiser died on 4 June 1945 in Ascona.
