Biography

Georg Jarno, born György Cohner, was born on 3 June 1868 in Ofen (Buda) and died on 24 May 1920 in Breslau. After studying in Budapest he worked as a theatre conductor in Bremen, Gera, Halle, Metz, Liegnitz, Chemnitz and Magdeburg, among others, and as an opera director in Bad Kissingen. He then settled as a freelance composer in Vienna, where his brother Josef Jarno directed the Theater in der Josefstadt. Jarno's greatest success came in 1907 with the operetta 'Die Försterchristl', followed in 1910 by 'Das Musikantenmädel'; he wrote several of his works for his sister-in-law, the actress and singer Hansi Niese.
