Biography
Gabriel Fauré was born on 12 May 1845 in Pamiers in southern France and, from the age of nine, spent eleven years training at the Paris École Niedermeyer, studying among others with Camille Saint-Saëns. He went on to work as organist at several Paris churches, from 1896 at the Église de la Madeleine, and taught composition at the Paris Conservatoire, where his pupils included Maurice Ravel and Nadia Boulanger. From 1905 to 1920 he served as the Conservatoire's director and pushed through numerous reforms there, even as increasing deafness made his work progressively harder. Besides his only opera, "Pénélope" (1913), Fauré is best known for chamber music, piano works, around a hundred songs, and his celebrated Requiem (1887-1890). He died in Paris on 4 November 1924.
