Biography

Fritz Kortner, born Fritz Nathan Kohn on 12 May 1892 in Vienna, died on 22 July 1970 in Munich. He became known as a stage actor, notably in Ernst Toller's Die Wandlung in 1919, and was seen as a defining figure of Weimar-era expressionist theatre. As a Jew, he was forced to flee the Nazis in 1932 and emigrated via Europe to the United States. After returning in 1947, he became an influential director of postwar West German theatre, above all at the Munich Kammerspiele and Berlin's Schillertheater. During his exile he also wrote the play Donauwellen (1949). Kortner received honours including the Federal Cross of Merit and the order Pour le Mérite for Sciences and Arts.
