Biography

Friedrich Wolf was born in 1888 in Neuwied and died in 1953 in Lehnitz near Berlin. He studied medicine in Heidelberg, Munich, Tübingen, Bonn and Berlin, earned his doctorate in 1913 and later practised as a homeopathic physician, including in Hechingen and Stuttgart. A member of the German Communist Party from 1928, he wrote two of the most widely performed German plays of their time: the abortion drama "Cyankali" (1929) and the anti-Nazi play "Professor Mamlock" (1933/34). In 1933 he emigrated via Austria, Switzerland and France to the Soviet Union, was interned in the French camp Le Vernet in 1939, and later took part in the National Committee for a Free Germany. After 1945 he returned to Germany, became East Germany's first ambassador to Poland in 1949 and co-founded the GDR Academy of Arts; his sons Markus and Konrad Wolf later became known respectively as an intelligence chief and a film director.
