Friedrich Maximilian Klinger

1752 – 1831 · German

Biography

Friedrich Maximilian Klinger was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1752 and grew up in modest circumstances; Goethe, whom he knew from their shared time in Frankfurt, helped fund his law studies in Gießen. In the 1770s he wrote two of the defining plays of the Sturm und Drang movement, Die Zwillinge (1776) and Sturm und Drang (1777), before working as a playwright for a touring theatre troupe. In 1780 he entered Russian military service, serving under Grand Duke Paul, taking part in campaigns and eventually rising to lieutenant general. From 1803 he served as curator of the University of Dorpat, shaping its educational policy, before retiring in 1820. Klinger died in Dorpat, in present-day Estonia, in 1831.
