Biography
Frédéric Chopin was born in 1810 in Żelazowa Wola near Warsaw and showed exceptional musical talent from childhood. In 1830 he left Poland for good and settled in Paris, where he worked as a celebrated pianist and piano teacher and, from 1837, was romantically involved with the writer George Sand. His compositional output consists almost entirely of piano music – nocturnes, études, mazurkas, waltzes, ballades and two piano concertos – and is regarded as a high point of Romantic piano literature. He died in Paris in 1849 of tuberculosis; his piano works were later orchestrated and compiled for ballets such as 'Les Sylphides' and 'Die Kameliendame'.
