Franz Grillparzer

Biography

Franz Grillparzer was born on 15 January 1791 in Vienna, the son of a lawyer, and studied law there himself, graduating in 1811. In 1813 he entered the service of the Vienna Court Chamber as a clerk and was appointed director of its archive in 1832, a post he held until his retirement in 1856. Alongside this career, he made his name as a playwright at the Vienna Burgtheater with tragedies such as 'Die Ahnfrau' (1817), 'Sappho' (1818) and the trilogy 'Das goldene Vlies' (1821). The scandalous failure of his comedy 'Weh dem, der lügt!' in 1838 deepened his withdrawal from public theatrical life; his late plays 'Ein Bruderzwist in Habsburg', 'Die Jüdin von Toledo' and 'Libussa' were staged only after his death. Grillparzer died on 21 January 1872 in Vienna and is regarded as the most important playwright of nineteenth-century Austria.
