Francesco Sacrati

1605 – 1650 · Italian

Biography

Francesco Sacrati was baptised on 17 September 1605 in Parma and died on 20 May 1650, probably in Modena. He belonged to the first generation of composers writing for Venice after its first public opera houses opened in 1637. With La finta pazza (1641), to a libretto by Giulio Strozzi, he inaugurated the newly built Teatro Novissimo; the work was performed in Paris as early as 1645 and was long thought lost until the score was rediscovered in 1984. Musicologists also suspect he had a hand in the surviving version of Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea. In 1649 he became maestro di cappella at the court of Modena.
