Biography
Francesca Caccini was born in Florence in 1587 and trained in singing and lute by her father, the composer Giulio Caccini. Together with her sister Settimia, she performed as part of their father's vocal ensemble, which toured as far as the French royal court in 1604/05; Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici declined to let her take a permanent post in Paris. After her father's death in 1618, she was, alongside Jacopo Peri, the highest-paid musician at the Medici court in Florence. Her only surviving stage work, the opera "La liberazione di Ruggiero dall'isola d'Alcina" (1625), is regarded as the earliest surviving opera by a woman composer. Her later years are poorly documented, and 1641 is the last year for which her life is securely attested.
