Biography
Franca Rame was born in 1929 in Parabiago near Milan into a family of travelling actors and performed on stage from childhood. She married Dario Fo in 1954, and in 1958 the couple founded their own theatre company in Milan, with Fo as writer and director and Rame as leading actress and manager. From the 1970s she increasingly wrote her own material, mostly feminist monologues, and co-wrote plays with Fo such as "Tutta casa, letto e chiesa" (1977) and "Coppia aperta, quasi spalancata" (1983). In 1973 she was abducted and assaulted by fascists, but returned to the stage soon after with a monologue of her own about the attack. She was politically active, serving as a senator (2006–2008) for the Italia dei Valori party, and died in Milan in 2013. When Dario Fo received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1997, he explicitly dedicated it to Franca Rame.
