1729 – 1774 · Bohemian

Biography

Florian Leopold Gassmann was born on 3 May 1729 in Brüx, Bohemia, and died on 21 January 1774 in Vienna. As a teenager he left home against his father's wishes and travelled via Karlsbad to Venice, where he studied counterpoint with Giovanni Battista Martini in Bologna. From 1757 he supplied the Teatro San Moisè in Venice with a new carnival opera almost every year while directing the choir of the Ospedale degl'Incurabili. In 1763 he moved to the Viennese court as ballet composer, became imperial chamber composer in 1764 and Hofkapellmeister in 1772. In Vienna he discovered and taught the young Antonio Salieri, and in 1771 he founded the Tonkünstler-Sozietät, whose concerts gave rise to the city's public musical life.
