Biography
Fiston Mwanza Mujila was born in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, in 1981 and studied literature and humanities. In 2009 he came to Graz as city writer, where he later taught African literature at the university. His debut novel “Tram 83” (2014) won awards including the Etisalat Prize for Literature and, in 2017, the International Literature Award of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt; it was longlisted for the Man Booker International Prize in 2016 and has been adapted for the stage several times. He writes poetry, prose and plays in French, among them “Et les moustiques sont des fruits à pépins” (2015), “Zu der Zeit der Königinmutter” (premiered in 2019 at Vienna’s Akademietheater) and the novel “La danse du vilain” (2020). In 2024 he received the Preis der Literaturhäuser, and in 2026 the Erich Fried Prize. In the 2026/27 season he is Poet in Residence at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and wrote the libretto for “Sunville”, in which he also appears as narrator.
