Biography
Ferruccio Busoni was born on 1 April 1866 in Empoli near Florence, the son of an Italian clarinettist and a pianist, and remained an Italian citizen throughout his life. After training in Vienna, Graz and Leipzig, he taught and performed as a pianist and composer in Helsinki, Moscow and Boston, among other places, before settling in Berlin in 1894. During the First World War he lived in exile in Zurich from 1915 to 1920, where his operas „Arlecchino“ and „Turandot“ received their premieres. Back in Berlin from 1920, he led a master class in composition and worked until his death on his final opera, „Doktor Faust.“ Busoni died on 27 July 1924 in Berlin and is remembered as a versatile pianist, composer, conductor and musical thinker of musical modernism.
