Biography
Fernando de Rojas was born around 1465 in La Puebla de Montalbán near Toledo, into a family of Jewish converts (conversos). He studied law at the University of Salamanca, where, according to his own preface, he found an anonymous first act of “La Celestina” as a student and completed it into the “Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea”. He went on to practise as a lawyer in Talavera de la Reina, where he also held a council office for a time; in 1525 his own converso background drew the Inquisition’s attention when he represented his father-in-law in court. Rojas died in April 1541 in Talavera de la Reina, remaining essentially a one-work author throughout his life.
