Biography
Ferenc Molnár was born in Budapest in 1878 and turned to journalism and the theatre after studying law. With society plays set in cosmopolitan Budapest, such as Liliom (1909) and, later, The Swan (1920), he became one of the most widely performed playwrights of his time in the German- and English-speaking theatre. During the First World War he worked for a time as a war correspondent. Facing persecution as a Jew, he emigrated to the United States before the Second World War and joined its community of émigré writers in New York. He died in New York in 1952.
