Biography
Ferdinand Schmalz was born in Graz in 1985 and grew up in Admont in Upper Styria. He studied theatre studies and philosophy in Vienna. His first play, “am beispiel der butter” (the example of butter), won the Retzhofer Drama Prize in 2013, premiered at Schauspiel Leipzig and was nominated for the Mülheim Dramatists' Prize; in 2014 the magazine Theater heute named him young dramatist of the year. Later plays include “dosenfleisch” (2015, Deutsches Theater Berlin), “der thermale widerstand” (2016, Schauspielhaus Zürich) and “jedermann (stirbt)” (2018, Burgtheater Vienna), which won him the Nestroy Theatre Prize in 2018, as well as “hildensaga. ein königinnendrama” (2022) for the Nibelungen-Festspiele Worms. In 2017 he won the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize with an excerpt from “mein lieblingstier heißt winter”; the novel of the same name appeared in 2021 and was longlisted for the German Book Prize. He received the Arthur Schnitzler Prize in 2023 and the Gert Jonke Prize in 2025.
