Biography

Louis Joseph Ferdinand Hérold was born on 28 January 1791 in Paris and died of tuberculosis on 19 January 1833 in nearby Neuilly-sur-Seine. From 1806 he studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Louis Adam (piano), Charles-Simon Catel (harmony) and Étienne-Nicolas Méhul (composition), winning the Prix de Rome in 1812. After years of study in Italy and Vienna he returned to Paris, worked at the Théâtre-Italien from 1821, and joined the Paris Opéra in 1827, receiving the Legion of Honour in 1828. Of his roughly thirty stage works, the opera Zampa (1831) and the ballet La Fille mal gardée (1828) became his most lasting successes, alongside the opera Le pré aux clercs (1832).
