Biography

Feliks Nowowiejski was born in 1877 in Wartenburg (now Barczewo) in what was then Prussian Warmia, and worked as a church organist before studying composition with Max Bruch at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin. After periods in Kraków and, during the First World War, in Berlin, he settled in Poznań in 1919, teaching at the conservatory and shaping the city's musical life. He composed operas, oratorios, and organ and choral works, and in 1910 set Maria Konopnicka's patriotic poem "Rota" to music, which remains one of Poland's best-known patriotic songs. He died in Poznań in 1946.
