Biography

Fatma Aydemir was born in Karlsruhe in 1986 and studied German and American studies in Frankfurt am Main. From 2012 to 2023 she worked as an editor at the Berlin daily taz, covering pop culture, literature and Turkey, and co-founded the bilingual portal taz.gazete; since 2023 she has been a columnist for The Guardian. Her debut novel Ellbogen (2017), about an escalation of violence in an underground station, won the Klaus-Michael Kühne Prize and the Franz Hessel Prize. Her family novel Dschinns (2022) was shortlisted for the German Book Prize and received the LiteraTour Nord Prize. Both novels were adapted for the stage by Selen Kara at the Nationaltheater Mannheim, and Ellbogen was also made into a film in 2024; with Doktormutter Faust, written for Schauspiel Essen in 2023, Aydemir wrote her first original play. Together with Hengameh Yaghoobifarah she edited the essay collection Eure Heimat ist unser Albtraum, and she is a co-editor of the literary magazine Delfi.
