Biography
Ewald Palmetshofer was born in Linz in 1978 and studied theology as well as philosophy and psychology, among other subjects, in Vienna. In the 2007/08 season he was house playwright at the Schauspielhaus Wien, where his play “hamlet ist tot. keine schwerkraft” premiered in 2007; in 2008 he was named emerging playwright of the year. For “die unverheiratete” (premiered in Vienna in 2014) he received the Mülheim Dramatists’ Prize in 2015, and in the same year he was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen. Alongside original plays such as “Die Verlorenen” (Munich 2019), he has written rewritings of classic dramas, including “Edward II. Die Liebe bin ich” (2015), “Vor Sonnenaufgang” after Gerhart Hauptmann (Basel 2017) and “Sankt Falstaff” after Shakespeare’s “King Henry IV”, which premiered at the Residenztheater in Munich in 2025. Since the 2019/20 season he has worked there as a dramaturg. His other awards include the Else Lasker-Schüler Dramatists’ Prize (2018), the Gert Jonke Prize (2019) and the Ludwig Mülheims Theatre Prize (2026).
