Biography
Eve Ensler was born on 25 May 1953 in New York City and grew up in Scarsdale, New York. She studied poetry and drama at Middlebury College in Vermont, graduating in 1975. She became known in 1996 for The Vagina Monologues, a play based on roughly 200 interviews that has since been translated into 48 languages and performed in more than 140 countries, earning her an Obie Award in 1997. In 1998 the work led her to found the worldwide anti-violence movement V-Day. Further stage works such as Necessary Targets followed; in 2011 she received the Tony Awards' Isabelle Stevenson Award for her humanitarian work.
