Biography

Euripides was born around 480 BC on the island of Salamis and died in 406 BC at the court of King Archelaus I of Macedon in Pella. Of his roughly ninety tragedies, eighteen survive complete, along with the satyr play 'Cyclops' — more than the surviving output of Aeschylus and Sophocles combined. Despite his popularity with audiences, he won first prize at the City Dionysia only four times during his lifetime, far fewer than his two great contemporaries. His plays are considered psychologically and socially more modern: he gave independent voices to women, slaves and ordinary people and portrayed the gods as morally questionable, which often drew criticism. In his final years he accepted an invitation to the Macedonian court, where several of his last works, including 'The Bacchae' and 'Iphigenia in Aulis', premiered only after his death.
