Biography

Ernst Elias Niebergall was born on 13 January 1815 in Darmstadt and died there on 19 April 1843. Orphaned early, he attended Darmstadt's Pädagog grammar school on a scholarship and from 1831 studied theology in Gießen, where he also met Georg Büchner. After his student fraternity was banned, he was barred from taking his examinations and worked instead as a private tutor and later as a teacher of Latin and Greek in Dieburg and Darmstadt. He never saw his best-known work, the local farce Datterich (1841), performed on stage; its premiere came only in 1862. Niebergall died of pneumonia at just 28.
