Biography

Louis-Étienne-Ernest Rey, known as Reyer, was born on 1 December 1823 in Marseille. Against the wishes of his father, a notary, he went to Algeria in 1839, but soon turned wholly to music and moved to Paris in 1848, where his aunt, the composer Louise Farrenc, trained him. As a music critic, including for the "Journal des débats", he was an early and vocal champion of Hector Berlioz and Richard Wagner. His principal works as a composer are the operas "Sigurd" (Brussels, 1884) and "Salammbô" (Brussels, 1890), both based on mythological or historical subjects. Reyer also served as librarian of the Paris Opéra and inspector-general of French music schools. He died on 15 January 1909 in Le Lavandou.
