Biography
Ernest Chausson was born on 20 January 1855 in Paris and initially studied law before turning to music in 1879. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Jules Massenet and then privately with César Franck, whose cyclic formal principles shaped his own style. From 1886 he served as secretary of the Société Nationale de Musique and turned his Paris salon into a meeting point for artists such as Debussy and Dukas. Alongside the opera "Le roi Arthus" (composed 1886–1895), his works include the "Poème" for violin and orchestra and two symphonies. Chausson died on 10 June 1899, aged 44, in a cycling accident in Limay.
