Biography
Ernest Bloch was born on 24 July 1880 in Geneva into a Jewish family and studied violin with Eugène Ysaÿe in Brussels, among others, as well as composition with Iwan Knorr in Frankfurt and Émile Jaques-Dalcroze in Geneva. In 1916 he first travelled to the United States, where he taught at the Mannes College of Music in New York from 1917. From 1920 to 1925 he was the first director of the newly founded Cleveland Institute of Music, then director of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music until 1930; he became a US citizen in 1924. He became internationally known chiefly for works on Jewish themes such as the cello piece Schelomo; he had already composed his only opera, Macbeth, in Switzerland between 1904 and 1906. Bloch died on 15 July 1959 in Portland, Oregon.
