Biography
Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari was born Hermann Friedrich Wolf on 12 January 1876 in Venice, the son of the German painter August Wolf and the Venetian Emilia Ferrari; from 1895 he added his mother’s surname to his own. After early attempts at painting in Rome and Munich, he turned to music and studied composition at the Munich Akademie der Tonkunst from 1892 to 1895 under Josef Rheinberger. From 1902 to 1909 he directed the Liceo Musicale Benedetto Marcello in Venice, before settling again mostly in the Munich area. His Goldoni operas, such as "Le donne curiose" and "I quatro rusteghi", brought him international fame, and he is regarded as a reformer of opera buffa in the early twentieth century. Wolf-Ferrari died on 21 January 1948 in his native Venice.
